About ASKMOTT & Justin Mott

Experience-Driven Photography Education Shaped by Professional Practice

ASKMOTT was created by photographer and educator Justin Mott for photographers seeking clarity, accountability, and long-term growth. The emphasis is on developing strong habits, clear intent, and a deeper understanding of why photographs work.

The approach is shaped by nearly two decades of professional photography experience, including extensive editorial and commercial work and over 100 assignments for The New York Times. Everything taught through ASKMOTT is grounded in the standards and challenges of professional photographic practice.

Justin Mott is an editorial and commercial photographer who has been based in Vietnam for almost 20 years. During that time, he has covered more than 100 assignments for The New York Times and shot global campaigns for Fortune 500 companies across Asia and beyond. Justin Mott Photography

He is comfortable whether running a large commercial production or navigating a sensitive, complex documentary shoot. Over the years, Justin has learned how to balance logistics and creativity so the job gets done smoothly and the story still shines through. Justin Mott Photography

ASKMOTT exists as an extension of this experience — a place where photographers can develop their vision and craft with thoughtful, direct feedback rather than formulas or fluff. The focus is on intentional shooting, honest self-editing, and clear decision-making. The aim is not instant transformation, but sustainable growth over time.

When he is not working, Justin is usually with his wife and their three rescue dogs or out riding his bike. He has completed multiple Ironman races, even if he jokes that he “doesn’t look the part.” Justin Mott Photography

Personal work remains an important part of his practice. One of Justin’s proudest projects documented the last two northern white rhinos in Kenya, a body of work featured in Leica’s global Witness Campaign. He is also an ambassador for the conservation group Helping Rhinos, reflecting his long-standing commitment to wildlife and environmental storytelling. Justin Mott Photography

ASKMOTT is for photographers who want to understand their own work better. Many arrive feeling stuck, uncertain of their direction, or disconnected from why they make images in the first place. Through coaching, portfolio reviews, workshops, and written lessons, the emphasis remains on developing habits that support thoughtful practice, not chasing trends or tools.

Justin is based in Hanoi, Vietnam, and works internationally. Online coaching and portfolio reviews are available worldwide, and in-person workshops are offered periodically in select locations, including Vietnam and beyond.

ASKMOTT is not about becoming a different photographer overnight. It is about becoming a more intentional one over time.
