Mastering Street Photography: My Essential Commandments

Street photography is an art form that requires more than just technical skill—it demands patience, creativity, and a deep understanding of the environment around you. Over the years, I’ve developed my own set of commandments that have guided me in capturing compelling street images. Whether you’re new to street photography or looking to refine your approach, these rules can help elevate your work.

1. Always Be Ready

Keep your camera on and settings dialed in. Street photography is about capturing fleeting moments, and you won’t have time to fiddle with your gear when the perfect shot presents itself.

2. Ditch the Lens Cap

You’re more likely to miss a great shot while removing a lens cap than you are to protect your lens from damage. Keep your gear accessible and ready to shoot at all times.

3. Wear Your Gear

Your camera bag is great for transporting equipment, but when you’re out shooting, keep your camera on you. Street photography is unpredictable—be ready for anything.

4. Don’t Quit on a Shot

If you see potential in a scene, don’t give up just because the first few shots don’t work out. Stay patient, wait for the right moment, and be persistent.

5. Avoid Staging Shots

True street photography captures life as it happens. Avoid the temptation to stage scenes or ask people to pose. Authenticity is key.

6. Shoot Alone for Focus

While it’s fun to shoot with others, your best work will often come when you’re alone, free from distractions, and fully immersed in the moment.

7. Don’t Obsess Over Gear

Better gear doesn’t necessarily mean better photos. Focus on honing your skills rather than constantly upgrading your equipment.

8. Stay Safe and Be Aware

Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in unfamiliar or potentially dangerous areas. Tape over flashy logos on your gear to draw less attention.

9. Patience is Key

Great street photography doesn’t happen in an instant. Learn to anticipate moments, be patient, and let scenes develop naturally.

10. Keep It Fun

Above all, remember that photography should be enjoyable. Don’t take yourself too seriously, and have fun capturing the world around you.

By following these commandments, you’ll be better equipped to navigate the challenges of street photography and come away with images that truly stand out.
